I have three Jack Russells who can be very determined, and they haven't figured out how to overpower this gate. It wouldn't be that hard, as it's just held in place by friction, but it's sturdy enough to outlast their initial efforts, so they've left it alone. Whew. As far as how it works, I had to watch a Youtube video to figure it out, as the directions were on the box and were covered up by the shipping label. It's easy once you know, but not obvious. I took the youtuber's advice and marked the slat that the adjustable bar works best in, because it's hard to find again and get it right every time otherwise. This is a straightforward contraption that works pretty darn well. It doesn't ruin the decor even though it's not exactly a work of art. I can step over it pretty easily. If stepping over it would be an issue for you, then consider getting a latching gate, because you don't want to have to keep removing it and putting it back all the time. That said, it takes just a minute to set up, and it leaves no marks when you remove it, which -- along with its price and general good looks -- is its greatest advantage.

Good value for the money
If you need a strong gate or looking for something that is one handed, quick and easy to set up, than this is not what you want... That said, for us it's works fine and at a price we could afford. My wife is retired and watches our nephew's 9 month old daughter. She needed two gates to keep her in the living room and away from the stairs going up and out of the kitchen. Since she only watches her once a week I did not want to spend 3-4 times as much for a fancy gate. This fit the bill perfectly. It's a bit of a juggling act to get it set in the doorway but I marked the indent where the gat has to be at to lock so it should help. One other thing, we had these gates at my parent's house when our daughters were babies, almost 30 years ago and they were made a lot better back then. But what wasn't!

small dogs, yes - Toddlers/Large dogs, No
Bought this gate to keep my small dog on my patio. Very shaky construction. I wouldn't recommend it for use with a large dog or toddler. Getting it in place and locked into position is difficult so I propped it up against the patio fence with my planters. I didn't want to spend alot on a gate and, for the price, it was worth it.

Didn't work for me personally
I am not going to be able to use it as purchased. The notches are approximately 1 inch increments and must lock into the predetermined sizes, possibly our doorways are not standard size? We are still trying to figure out away to adapt it to our home doorway sizes. Trying to cut notches between the notches to get some pressure on the gate so it doesn't fall over. In the future I will look for something that has a tension spring in it. .....I'm new at all this baby stuff :)

Decent gate, did get damaged
I bought this gate for my in-laws to contain their small-breed dog while they are away during the day. The gate worked well, but the bottom corner got torn loose by the dog trying to escape at some point during his containment recently. The gate held, but we were surprised the dog was able to do the damage here.
