Eric Clapton is my all-time favorite singer. If it has the name "Clapton" on it, BUY IT! I don't think you'll be dissapointed.
Clapton's output in recent years has been patchy, with some great traditional blues, (Riding with the King, Me and Mr Johnson), and the innovative Pilgrim. Sadly, Back Home, like Reptile before it, is determinedly Easy Listening and instantly forgetable. In the cover blurb Eric even talks of making music that is 'safe to listen to.' The first track is about being tired from sharing the house with a baby, and it doesn't get any better. Why the greatest blues and rock guitarist this country has ever produced should want to make music that is safe to listen to is beyond me. We love you Eric - but you're better than this.
This is the album that got put to one side while 'Me & Mr Johnson' was recorded and issued. The reception to that album seems to have inspired Clapton to write and record some of his most approachable songs since 'Journeyman' back in the late 80's. The feel of this album harks back to that era, but the subjects of his songs continue in the vein of his more recent work, such as 'Reptile'. There is a mixture of rhythms on this album - rock, reggae, and, of course, the blues. Overall a good album, though probably not the one to use as an example of how good Clapton can be. However, this is a more rounded album than some of the more recent offerings.
