The reel is very solid feeling and smooth with a slight amount of handle backlash. I did need to shim the spool to get an even line lay, the spool loading was biased toward the top. Loaded with 300yds of 30lb braid. The Daiwa BG series reels are slightly larger than other manufacturers reels of the same size category. I have only used this reel a couple of times in the surf throwing Daiwa SP minnows, Luckycraft 110 minnows, Calissa minnows and 1oz Miki jigs on a 10’7” Okuma Hawaiian Custom Menpachi rod. I have had no problem with the bail tripping on its own as some other reviewers have mentioned. The reel is heavy which helps balance the weight of my 10’7” rod. This reel is a good bargain at its price point.

The bail on the new BG4000 snaps shut while casting. You can not surf cast w/ this reel, your expensive lures will snap off during the cast! The new BG4000 & smaller sizes are NOTHING like the BG4500 & larger (HEAVIER) reels....although close in looks, & price. The BG4000 has an automatic bail trip mechanism too weak to stand up to saltwater casting. The BG4000 also -does not have- a rotor brake, or backup mechanical anti reverse, of the larger BG4500 & up! You have to take the automatic bail mechanism out of the BG4000 to use it. The BG4000 is a 200yrds of 40lb braid reel, but is not built to take 40lb line. They had great chance to build a lightweight modern reel that held up to 40lb. line, but made a average reel instead.

The reborn new Daiwa BG that stood the test of time on charter boats over 30 yrs. is a must have.Top quality reel as good as the $1000.00 Shimano Stellas. This reel holds more line than any other brand. The size is a bit larger but not much, but you need that with the bigger powerful main gear,They look great feel great, work great hold more line,.... These are my first Daiwas I own 2 now a 3500 BG and a 4000 BG that are used more than my 4000 Shimanos which hold 100 yd's less than the BG's 4000 .Daiwa has been around for ages and the BG series is affordable and comes in a variety of sizes and in between sizes that other reel manufacturers do not offer without buying another reel...Daiwa did it right again with this reel.perfect size 4000 and 3500 for inshore and offshore....

Bought two of the BG 4000 reels last year, so I'm on my second year fishing with thee reels. They are really smooth and great cranking power. I fish mostly surf now in the Gulf, so the salt content is one of the highest in the world. I do wash them down and thoroughly rinse after each use and there is no sign of corrosion anywhere. The bail typically does not flip during casting but it has occurred a couple times. I usually flip it manually after casting. I loosen the drag just enough to not lose a rig if it does flip. Very happy with the reels and they are holding up as well as the more expensive Penn's that I have.

This is THE BEST reel you can get for your money. It has been engineered to be tough, reliable and strong. I own several, from the 2500, 4000, 5000, and 6500. I use them for everything from small fish to big ones. I use them in The Gulf of Mexico, offshore and inshore. They stand up to the elements (salt) and are just great reels. They have excellent drag and are smooth as silk. GET yours- you will not regret it.
