The feature film debut of Hayao Miyazaki (NAUSICAÄ OF THE VALLEY OF THE WIND, PRINCESS MONONOKE), THE CASTLE OF CAGLIOSTRO depicts one adventure of the master thief Lupin and his rough-around-the-edges gunman, Jigen. Something of a cross between Batman, James Bond, and Cary Grant's character in TO CATCH A THIEF, Lupin is a suave ladies' man who is also given to feats of athletic daring, aided by a gadget filled belt that gets him out of more than a few scrapes. The plot has Lupin and Jigen traveling to the sleepy little country of Cagliostro and coming to the aid of the unwilling fiance of the diabolical Count Cagliostro. After CAGLIOSTRO, Miyazaki stopped creating "slapstick" feature films in favor of more serious fare; CAGLIOSTRO shows, however, that he is quite capable of delivering the goods in this genre. Based on the Lupin comics by the artist Monkey Punch, CAGLIOSTRO is a great heist/chase film that surpasses most similar live action fare and breezes by with more than a couple of inventive set pieces, as well as some excellent comic dialogue. | |

Clasic tale of boy meets girl...
except of course the boy is the grandson of gentleman thief Arsene Lupin, and although he is a thief, he is hardly a gentleman. This is clasic Lupin at it's finest, however I reccomend that fans of the series watch it in Japanese with subtitles. The voice actors for the major characters are different from the series. Myozaki's take of lupin delves into the mysterious past of the thief. With other masterpieces like "Spirited Away" and "Metropolis" this early Myozaki shows the span of his tallent. Lupin goes in search of the source of a master counterfiter, only to find the ghosts of his past. Mystery and intreague ensue as Lupin and Jigen scour the European countryside for the source of the "Goat Money".
Child-Friendly Film with Lots of Laughs, Adventure, and Romance
The story centers around Ludwig the Third, a notorious thief, who travels to the Castle of Cagliostro looking for the legendary goat [counterfeit] bills. He plans to steal the plates used to manufacture the fake bills, but things become complicated when he meets Lady Claire. The entire cast retains its original charm from the adult TV series, Ludwig the Third, but in an appropriate, child-friendly manner. There aren't any bedroom scenes, and only one or two mild kissing scenes. There are a few spots that may be frightening to younger or sensetive children. For example, Ludwig frightens the "bad guys" using skeletons in the dungeon under the castle. It's not a scene that's predictable and can catch kids off guard; most are fine after the first viewing. I recommend this movie for guys and gals who like adventurous movies with classic romance. Because the film is fairly old, I suggest buying it in HD or remastered editions for the best viewing.
Great Movie!
I had never seen any movies or tv shows from the Lupin the 3rd series and had never read any of the manga. While looking for Studio Ghibli movies online I found out that Miyazaki actually directed this movie before the start of Studio Ghibli. I found this online at a good price and decided to buy it because I really enjoy his other works. This movie was a treat to watch, the anime is extremelyt well to have been made in the 70s. I found out later on that this isn't the only english version that had been made, infact several companies created english dubs. This one is claimed to be the most acurate to the original Japanese dialogue but has been frowned upon for it's amount of curse words (not really a childrens cartoon). This movie is fun, and adventurous and now i want to check out the other movies in the series (This happens to be the 2nd Lupin Movie). The DVD has no extras other than a Manga company shout out, which is about all that you will get from the other versions.
The Castle of Cagliostro
This is more adult anime. No real sex or typical anime nudity. It has some violence, and profamity but on the lower scale. It reminded me of the speed racer type animation of the 70's. The plot was a bit weak and reminiscent of some James Bond type intrigues, but overall a good movie. My 10 year old loved it so much I had to get the original TV animated series.
