Canon L-1 Vintage Rangefinder - Best Sounding - Beautiful Image
Purchased one and operation was very nice except that slow speeds became unreliable as is very common with rangefinders of this vintage. Compared to Canon VI-L rangefinder which is subsequent model, the L-1 finder has withstood aging of the rangefinder image beautifully. The L-1 has a "finer more precision sound" than the VI-L maybe because the L-1 has a cloth shutter and VI-L a metal shutter. The magnified focus position of the L-1 viewfinder is every bit as nice as the subsequent model VI-L. The L-1 however does not have differing frame lines. Each has the parallax correction built into the aux finder shoe. Canon design however provides for access to the slow speed unit in an easy manner due to the clam shell design and easy removal of the front and back of camera...for ease of maintenance. The sound of the L-1 is awesome and but for slow speed problems makes the choice between the VI-L and the L-1 a difficult one...so get one of each! Thomas E. Shafovaloff
Feels solid and reliable
I already have a couple of Leica IIIf cameras and wanted another LTM camera so I bought this one. Its heavier but feels reassuringly solid in the hand. Mine works fine (except it will not fire a flashgun). All the operations are smooth. I bought it to use with an 85mm LTM lens I have. I also bought a dedicated Canon 85mm viewfinder. This is a really neat feature: there is a little ball in the top of the cold shoe that causes the dedicated viewfinder to pivot as the focus is adjusted. Result? Automatic parallax correction! I really neat feature which I think is unique to Canon and only a few Canon models at that. So I'm very pleased with the camera. Its exactly what I wanted for the intended application.
