Anita Shreve has always been a hit or miss author for me. Some of her books I have absolutely loved (STRANGE FITS OF PASSION, THE PILOTS WIFE), while others I loathed (FORTUNES ROCKS, A WEDDING IN DECEMBER). I consider this book to be a hit. I particularly enjoyed the "cut to the chase" style in which this book was written. It's not bogged down with unnecessary description. Shreve applies just enough to put you in the moment. I loved the character of Sydney. She was written incredibly well and I felt for her. Without giving anything away, when Sydney leaves the Edwards' house with her suitcase...well lets just say it's been a long time since I've had that "punched in the stomach" feeling while reading a book. I thought most of the other characters were very well written as well. I have no complaints with the characters of Mr. Edwards and Julie, maybe because they were so likable, but I would have liked a little bit more background on a few others. Why was Mrs. Edwards such a polar opposite of her husband? Why was there such an intense sibling rivalry between Ben and Jeff? While I would have like answers to these questions, it did not detract from my enjoyment of the story. I was impressed with the way Shreve subtly wove stories from previous books (THE PILOTS WIFE, FORTUNES ROCKS) into this storyRead full review
I have been reading her books for a few years now and I love that some of them are part of one house's history on the beach near Portsmouth, NH. Her writing is so readable and hard to put down. I read this book non-stop in 24 hours and am dazzled by her incredible thoughtfulness and how she expresses every day things that happen to all of us. When there is pain it is palpable and when there is joy you want to jump up but then you would have to put the book down...another great read from one of my favorites and I found out we both hail from Duxbury, Massachusetts in different ways...
Body Surfing by Anita Shreve is a MASTERPIECE in modern literature. It is so subtle and yet very descriptive and I felt myself swept away by the characters and plotline immediately. It is a story of love, family, longing, desire and the choices we make throughout our lives that affect it as a whole. Sometimes we choose wisely and sometimes we wish we could go back....This book is one that is one that was recommended for a reading group in a current book store right now. I am SOOOO glad I checked ebay first and got a fantastic copy from here. DON'T MISS OUT by not reading this book! I was VERY SAD to come to the final sentence. I did NOT want it to end.....
This is her most recent book and it gives you a great story while tying in details from her previous novels. It brings all the worlds together subtly, and gives you a whole new story to love. I enjoyed the believable characters, as I always love her characters. I've been quickly inhaling all of the novels by Anita Shreve and have more to go. I love what she's done with this story, although some parts are somewhat predictable her style is what captures my attention. Things that may have seemed cliche with other authors, I find endearing when she does it.
I am a great fan of Anita Shreve. She has a dramatic, yet comfortable writing style. Her characters convey much depth of feeling - her books are largely love stories. What makes them different is the time periods in which they are written - subtlties that place the events in times gone by. A time line is formed by the books she has written - all staged in similar location. Body Surfing is well woven and the characters are interesting. Although it may ber considered a "chick book", men may also enjoy the plot!
