The Kenton mellophonium orchestra was at it best for "Adventures in Blues." Gene Roland's origional blues draped charts uses the Kenton sidemen with wonderful results with an extra bonus. Roland solos on mellophonium and soprano sax. His solo on "Night At The Gold Nugget" is especially note-worthy. Other soloist are: Bob Fitzpatrick on trombone, Marv Stamm on trumpet, Dee Barton on Trombone, Gabe Baltazar on lead alto and Stan Kenton on piano. With the rhythum section of Pat Senatore, bass, and Jerry McKenzie, drums, this recording kicks ass in blue hue. The band is well anchored with Dave Wheeler and Jim Amlotte on bass trombones, Allan Beutler, baritone sax, and Joel Kaye doubling on baritone and bass sax. As a Kenton fan since the 50's I would recommend this recording to any jazz fan and especially the fans of the large sound. For those new to the Kenton sound, this would be a great introduction. However, beware that Stan Kenton may be additive. Once you hear one thing you want to hear more and more. Listen to the tonal poetry, the deep current and exceptional phrasing makes this a wonderful listening pleasure.Read full review
