9 to 5 w/Fonda, Parton & Tomlin 2006 DVD
Three sexually harrassed office co-workers (Jane Fonda, Dolly Parton & Lily Tomlin) serve (with much reluctance and resentment) a large corporation's chauvinist, sexist, harassing boss (Dabney Coleman). The boss has led the co-workers to believe that his personal secretary (Dolly Parton) is his mistress. The huge office of employees therefore snub her even though she's hurt by it and is a faithful wife who is forever escaping all of her harassing boss's heathen sexual advances. When Tomlin confronts Parton about this mistress bit, Parton goes off in her film debut. The trio decide to go out for a drink and wind up at Fonda's home smoking a joint Tomlin's son gave her. Once the three women are disinhibited by the effects of the alcohol and pot, they begin to share their fantasies about how to pay back their sexually harassing boss. Their fantasies are hysterically funny, and all that follows is true comedy, led by Tomlin, whose comedian's timing is perfect. The three become a combined force to reckon with. Let's just say it politely (as Fonda's character would) and call it a women standing up for women comedy that goes way beyond pale of liberation and daringly close to divine revenge. The 9 to 5 theme song that became a hit was Parton's and nominated for an Oscar. Parton's film debut, especially doing comedy aside two great actresses, is a real stunner where she proved without a doubt she could act.

"You're a sexist egotistical lying, hypocritical bigot"
So what happens when your boss makes every day of your life miserable? You can't kill him, but you can certainly fantasize about it. Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, and Dolly Parton do just that in this hysterical comedy of three secretaries who, after each has reached their limit with his treachery, bond together as friends and have a fantasy about how each would kill the boss. Unfortunately, their fantasies become reality when they are overheard talking about misunderstandings of events in the ladies room and this news is relayed to their boss. When he tries to use the information to his advantage, their fantasies play out causing them to have to keep him restrained in his own home until they can find and secure their own defensive information that would mean certain termination for their boss should the chairman of the board find out. Through artful scheming, they manage to keep the boss and his executive administrative assistant at bay until a surprise twist sets him free. The showdown becomes a beatdown with the boss reaping his just reward and the three secretaries find their own brand of happiness in the end. This is a marvelous film, suitable for most ages. Be sure to see the featurette 9 @ 25 and the tribute to Colin Higgins.
YOU MUST SEE THIS!
I am a huge fan of the movie, and have been able to quote the lines since I was a kid when it came out. After 25 years, do you think I was READY for an update and bonus footage? The footage DID NOT disappoint me. Dolly Parton, ever the comic, cracked so many jokes that caught me off guard and one particular joke was featured in the filmed footage back in the 80's. Dolly was my reason for seeing the movie when it was in theaters. I am, you guessed it, a huge fan of her's, too! There are plenty of interviews from all the principal stars in the movie (even ROZ, who was a HOOT and very sweet!) and all had great things to say about the film. Pretty much a rarity to have ALL of the main characters show up in interview footage to comemmorate a movie. It was very refreshing to know that there weren't any egos that hindered the updated production by way of interviews. All of the stars look very good for having been immoratalized on celluloid 25 years ago, obviously much younger. The deleted scenes will show a pretty good reason as to why the scenes got cut (some were too long, some just plain bad angles), but, it's great to be the "fly on the wall" and see this stuff. Good, bad, indifferent. If you even remotely like the movie, the 25th Anniversary DVD needs to be seen. The actual widescreen seems to be alot bigger than the original DVD release with very thin black bands on top and bottom. Obviously, my rating of this is very prejudiced (I just LOVE the movie, PERIOD!) and mushy, but, in this day and age of boring news and gas prices and wars, it NICE to have something genuinely funny to laugh at. I must say, I was pretty down and depressed at the time I bought the disc, but, the Dolly jokes and the overall "good-feelings" they all had just melted all that away. It definitely was the what the Dr. ordered that day. It came through just when I needed it most. Again! Happy Watching, and, hey, get off the clock and GO HOME! 25 years of overtime it's time you collect the bonus features! -Randy-
