Reviews
"Forsyth skillfully surveys the whole, spellbinding saga in just 80 pithy pages. Drawings, photos, and action paintings illustrate the account. Make this "X-Planes" installment your introduction to Erich Bachem's quixotic - but perilous - project. Recommended!" -- Cybermodeler Online, "Rare photos and well-written text make this book a good value for the reader. Additionally, aviation artist Adam Tooby delivers excellent digital artwork, from his dramatic cover illustration to a dynamic two-page cutaway showing the Natter's internal systems. In all, this book is a good read and quality product at a more-than-reasonable price." - Air Classics Magazine ". . . a remarkable book that should be popular with fans of rocket-planes, German experimental aircraft, and bizarre designs. Highly recommended." - The Kitmaker Network "Robert Forsyth provides a good introduction to the Bachem Ba 349 Natter with an easy to read style. I especially appreciated his use of first person accounts throughout the book as it puts the reader in the cockpit." - IPMS/USA, "Rare photos and well-written text make this book a good value for the reader. Synopsis
A fascinating look at Nazi Germany's radical development of a manned missile to shoot down Allied bombers., A fascinating look at Nazi Germany's radical development of a manned missile to shoot down Allied bombers. The Bachem Ba 349 Natter was a secretive, vertical take-off, single-seat rocket interceptor intended to offer high-speed defence of key targets. This radical aircraft offered Luftwaffe an inexpensive means with which to intercept and attack Allied heavy bombers using a vertically-launched, semi-expendable machine built of wood and armed with a nose-mounted 'honeycomb' battery of spin-stabilised air-to-air rockets as well as cannon armament. Launched vertically at 36,000ft per minute, the pilot was expected to fly within range of the enemy bombers, fire his rockets at them, ram another bomber, eject and parachute to the ground. Illustrated with contemporary photographs and stunning commissioned artwork, this study examines this inventive yet ultimately unsuccessful attempt by the Luftwaffe to defend against the tide of Allied aircraft that was bombing German cities into the ground., The Bachem Ba 349 Natter was a secretive, vertical take-off, single-seat rocket interceptor intended to offer high-speed defense of key targets. Illustrated with contemporary photographs and stunning commissioned artwork, this study examines this inventive yet ultimately unsuccessful attempt by the Luftwaffe to defend against the tide of Allied aircraft that was bombing German cities into the ground., The Bachem Ba 349 Natter was a vertical take-off, single-seat rocket interceptor intended to give the Luftwaffe a weapon that could quickly reach the Allied heavy bombers that were devastating Germany and shoot them down. It was a semi-expendable machine built of wood and armed with a nose-mounted 'honeycomb' battery of spin-stabilised air-to-air rockets or 30mm cannon shells. With his Natter having launched like a manned surface-to-air missile, the pilot would climb towards his target at 36,000ft per minute, manoeuvre to within range of the enemy bombers and fire his rockets, before ejecting and parachuting to the ground. The ingenious concept proved dangerous, however, and on 1 March 1945, the first manned vertical rocket launch in history killed the Natter's test pilot when the machine plummeted to the ground less than a minute after it became airborne. Illustrated with contemporary photographs and stunning new artwork, this study examines this inventive attempt to defend German skies in the last days of the Reich. Throughout the last century, one-off experimental aircraft and cutting-edge military prototypes have pushed the boundaries of what is possible. Authoritative and accessible, X-Planes is the series that explains the technology behind the world's most important prototype and research aircraft, their often dangerous flight-test careers, and how their successes and failures influenced frontline aircraft development. Each Book Contains: The best archive photography, Meticulously detailed original artwork, Expert history and analysis. Book jacket.
