It's a bit squishy but surprisingly firm (hard to explain apparent squishy-yet-firm contradiction) and retains its shape well. Don't know if it'll squish more on a long trip. If you need to sit up higher in your car (have seen ads for up to 2.4" thick IIRC), this type of gel cushion works well because of its squishy firmness though I wish it was slightly larger.
