The fourth screen adaptation of Louisa May Alcott's classic 1869 novel, LITTLE WOMEN, is given a realistic and rounded treatment by screenwriter Jo Swicord and Australian director Gillian Armstrong, whose perspective emphasizes a feminist tone. The story chronicles the lives of a mother and four daughters and their daily toils during the Civil War in the absence of their father, a Union army chaplain. Winona Ryder (in an Oscar-nominated performance) is vibrant as Jo, the least conventional of the sisters. Christian Bale captures the ebullience of their neighbor, Laurie, whose company Jo enjoys so much it seems inevitable that they will end up together. Kirsten Dunst (at age 12) gives a fiery performance as the younger Amy, proving even more willful than Jo; Claire Danes brings a mysterious otherworldliness to Beth. LITTLE WOMEN, touchingly rendered, has many subtle moments and an appropriately moving visual sense to accompany the narrative. Susan Sarandon and Gabriel Byrne also star in this well-crafted film.

    This version is the BEST!

    Several movies of the book "Little Women" have been made over the last 50 years or so, but this version is the best for many reasons. Most importantly to me, this version reflects the book most closely. If you want to know what the book REALLY says, this is the version to see! Second, the scenes are beautiful! Third, I consider this movie to be a Christmas movie, because of all the beautiful winter scenes and the two Christmases the March family celebrates in the movie. I watch it every Christmas for the beautiful Christmas scenes and the movie's wonderful messages (love, forgiveness, etc.) Fourth, some of my favorite actors are in the movie: Winona Rider, Susan Sarandon, Kirsten Dunst, and Gabriel Byrne.     Very Touching and Classic

    In this movie, Little Women, you will find a mother and her four daughters while her husband is off working in the Civil War. It is a terrific story watching the girls growing up. You will laugh and cry in this movie. The scenery is beautiful as well as their outfits. Most of the focus is on Jo played by Winona Ryder. An absolutely terrific performance.

    I love Little Women!

    I love this movie! I watch it almost every night before I go to bed. Claire Danes is such a fabulous actress! The only 2 scenes in the movie that move me to tears are ones with her in it. The scene where the neighbor gives her the piano & the scene when she dies are my Favorites! I don't dislike anything about the movie. I wanted the movie because I can relate having grown up with 2 sisters of my own who are now my best friends.
