Published in conjunction with an exhibition held at the National Portrait Gallery and the Westmoreland Museum of Art in Greensburg, Pennsylvania, during 1995 and 1996. One of Americas most sought-after portrait painters at the turn of the century, Cecilia Beaux (1855-1942) was compared to John Singer Sargent by contemporary critics and was internationally admired. The 69 portraits presented here (31 color plates; the rest in black & white), accompanied by thorough captions, stand as evidence of her energy, insight, and genius. Cecilia Beaux has been overlooked in recent years and that is a crying shame. She is the only portrait painter who could rival-- and sometimes exceed-- Sargent. Get this book and see for yourself. Even though most of the pictures are not in color, you get a real sense of her talent. Highly recommend!
