Reviews
"Kremer was diligent and discerning in his research, and his story is a credible one nicely crafted."-- St. Louis Post-Dispatch, "Kremer has managed to produce an insightful and provocative account of a post-Civil War black leader who, despite the political influence he wielded during the nation's most controversial period, never fully benefited from the promise of equality."-- Journal of American History, "Despite the fact that James Milton Turner left no personal papers, Kremer does a credible job in describing the public life of this significant leader in post-Civil War Missouri, and in doing so adds to the growing literature on African American political leadership in the late 19th century."-- Choice

Synopsis
James Milton Turner, Missouri's most prominent nineteenth-century African American political figure, possessed a deep faith in America. The Civil War, he believed, had purged the land of its sins and allowed the country to realize what had always been its promise: the creation of a social and political environment in which merit, not race, mattered. Born a slave, Turner gained freedom when he was a child and received his education in clandestine St. Louis schools, later briefly attending Oberlin College. A self-taught lawyer, Turner earned a statewide reputation and wielded power far out of proportion to Missouri's relatively small black population. After working nearly a decade in Liberia, Turner never regained the prominence he had enjoyed during Reconstruction.

Made offer and received quick counteroffer from Catherine. We established a fair price and book was nicely packed and sent on its way. Was as described. Like all previous purchases from Midtown Scholar Bookstore, this was a pleasant experience. I highly recommend doing business with this firm! (Have lost count how many books I have purchased from this firm, but my opinion is based on numerous buys.)
