"An excellent and engagingly written historical synthesis that manages to be both nuanced and broad. It combines a wealth of empirical information with incisive analysis."--The Historian, Beeman has made a valuable contribution to the historiography of colonial British America by synthesizing a large body of research about political experience in the eighteenth century., "A major contribution to the study of colonial American politics: for scholars, it will help crystallize their thinking about colonial politics; for graduate students, it will serve as little short of a godsend."- New Perspectives on the Eighteenth Century, "A major contribution to the study of colonial American politics: for scholars, it will help crystallize their thinking about colonial politics; for graduate students, it will serve as little short of a godsend."--New Perspectives on the Eighteenth Century, "Beeman has made a valuable contribution to the historiography of colonial British America by synthesizing a large body of research about political experience in the eighteenth century."--North Carolina Historical Review, "A major contribution to the study of colonial American politics: for scholars, it will help crystallize their thinking about colonial politics; and for graduate students, it will serve as little short of a godsend."--, "Beeman has made a valuable contribution to the historiography of colonial British America by synthesizing a large body of research about political experience in the eighteenth century."- North Carolina Historical Review, Beautifully written and clearly reasoned. . . . Synopsis
On the eve of the American Revolution there existed throughout the British-American colonial world a variety of contradictory expectations about the political process. Not only was there disagreement over the responsibilities of voters and candidates, confusion extended beyond elections to the relationship between elected officials and the populations they served. So varied were people's expectations that it is impossible to talk about a single American political culture in this period. Not only was there disagreement over the responsibilities of voters and candidates, confusion extended beyond elections to the relationship between elected officials and the populations they served. So varied were people's expectations that it is impossible to talk about a single American political culture in this period. In The Varieties of Political Experience in Eighteenth-Century America , Richard R. Beeman offers an ambitious overview of political life in pre-Revolutionary America. Ranging from Virginia, Massachusetts, New York, South Carolina, and Pennsylvania to the backcountry regions of the South, the Mid-Atlantic, and northern New England, Beeman uncovers an extraordinary diversity of political belief and practice. In so doing, he closes the gap between eighteenth-century political rhetoric and reality. Political life in eighteenth-century America, Beeman demonstrates, was diffuse and fragmented, with America's British subjects and their leaders often speaking different political dialects altogether. Although the majority of people living in America before the Revolution would not have used the term "democracy," important changes were underway that made it increasingly difficult for political leaders to ignore "popular pressures." As the author shows in a final chapter on the Revolution, those popular pressures, once unleashed, were difficult to contain and drove the colonies slowly and unevenly toward a democratic form of government. Synthesizing a wide range of primary and secondary sources, Beeman offers a coherent account of the way politics actually worked in this formative time for American political culture., Ranging from Virginia, Massachusetts, New York, South Carolina, and Pennsylvania to the backcountry regions of the South, the Mid-Atlantic, and northern New England, The Varieties of Political Experience in Eighteenth-Century America offers an ambitious overview of political life in pre-Revolutionary America.

- a***a (344)- Feedback left by buyer.Past monthVerified purchaseThis hardback book is of the highest quality, has a fine appearance , arrived in perfect condition, and is an excellent value. On what I was not asked about this time, communicating with the seller would have required using email outside of the eBay system, because they do not accept eBay messages, the book was well packed in a purpose-designed cardboard box, the shipping was faster than I expected for the bound media rate, and the book was exactly as described and pictured.
- p***p (47)- Feedback left by buyer.Past yearVerified purchaseGreat seller! Item is what I ordered; good communication; shipped promptly; good value. NOTE TO SELLER: packaging was NOT appropriate for item; it was a flimsy, plastic envelope, with no stiff material to prevent creases. The book came with two deep creases that involved the *entire* item: one is a 1" triangle lower left side (bound edge); the other is a 7" triangle on upper right side (open edge).Beautiful Music for Two String Instruments, Bk 3: 2 Violins by Samuel Applebaum (#403989405345)
