Best Bang for Watts. Re-purposing. An Industrial Control Transformer.
Best Watts for your Buck. Re-purposing Used control Transformers into HV sweep tube Plate Transformers Ever tried to price a new1KVA vacuum tube plate transformer ? Cost is prohibitive. This a 1 KVA hunk of "Iron". I am using these type of transformers in linear amplifier applications. 120 AC v in. 460-0-460 out, Its called. Back feeding. Bear in mind this is a single phase transformer. Its a must. When back feeding. Use a Soft start circuit on the former output now input side of the iron. I discovered by trial and error. Putting two 1KVA of the same identical transformers is better than 1 2KVA transformer. Same Juice. But the 2x 1kva is a few pounds lighter than the 2KVA. Seems to hold true for the Dongans and GE. types single phase. 2x Dongan 1KVA will be used in the application as shown in the Photo. 2KVA is taller than the 2x 1KVA. The 2x 1KVA Dongans will fit snug in this vintage original enclosure ! 900+ volts at the plate of the 12x Sweep tubes. I have 1.5, 2 and 3 KVA Dongans. I don't know if its the Black color. But I like them more than the GE versions. Both are like the "everReady bunny" They just keep on going and going ! Photo is of a D&A Warrior Power Supply. I did not have time to remove the original smaller Iron. Or unpack the second Dongan 1KVA. It is obvious. Both Dongans will fit. 1/3 of the original transformer winding is a 12.6vtc fillament winding. When the upgrades are finished. The Warrior sweep tube fillament power will come from a separate fully regulated switching supply strapped on the back of the original Warrior.PSU ....... " Its got the Power Now" !
