Gran Turismo 2 is fundamentally based on the racing game genre. The player must maneuver an automobile to compete against artificially intelligent drivers on various race tracks. The game uses two different modes: arcade and simulation. In the arcade mode, the player can freely choose the courses and vehicles they wish to use. However, the simulation mode requires the player to earn driver's licenses, pay for vehicles, and earn trophies in order to unlock new courses. Gran Turismo 2 features nearly 650 automobiles and 27 racing tracks. Unlike its predecessor, the player can race events separately, instead of a tournament with multiple races. The player is no longer able to "qualify" for each race entered. Development After the unexpected success of Gran Turismo, lead developer Kazunori Yamauchi planned to make Gran Turismo 2 "an even better product". SCEA's marketing director (Ami Blaire) had high hopes, stating "the overwhelming and continuing popularity of Gran Turismo clearly positions Gran Turismo 2 to be one of the hottest titles available for the holidays and beyond". Jack Tretton (sales vice president of SCEA) had similar enthusiasm, expecting Gran Turismo 2 to "fly off the shelves faster than the original, continuing the momentum of this incredible franchise". Upon the game's release, players shortly found various errors and glitches. SCEA did not ignore the outcry, and offered a replacement if any problems occurred. One of them was when a player finishes the game and got everything they could, their percentage says 98.8%. The other glitch was that no matter what, even if a player saves the game, cars can disappear from their garage.
My review of Gran Turismo 2 on the original Playstation
I bought this game because I recently grabbed myself a Playstation original, and I had actually been planning to get one for a while JUST FOR THIS GAME. Because I remember playing this with friends who bought it when it was brand new, and how nice the games "engine" ran, meaning the feel of the handling and how fluid the animation and everything is. The game was never famous for its graphics, but they were pretty good AT THE TIME and for being on a 32-bit graphics system. I remember how cool it was to add all of the modifications to the car; Intakes, exhausts, lowering suspension, stage 1 2 and 3 turbos, e.t.c. I remember how cool it was to be able to select CARS YOU ACTUALLY SEE ON THE ROAD (650 of them to be exact!) You can select your mothers Honda Civic, your older brothers Honda S2000, your cousins Mitsubishi Eclipse, and even your very own Dodge Avenger!!! Yes, the very rare almost never even heard of Dodge Avenger is in this game and it is actually the one and only reason that I bought it. And the 27 tracks that you can race them on are pretty cool as well. Definitely recommend to someone who is not into a racing game so much for its graphics but into it for the quality of gameplay, its selectable cars, and tracks.
GT 2 is fun but graphics not as good as GT1
This game is a blast. For some reason however the graphics declined from the first game. I love GT1 and GT2 is just as fun especially the rally car feature. There are a ton more cars and tracks and options in GT2 that keep this game interesting for a long long time. There are more upgrades that you can perform on your car as well. As fun as this game is, I am surprised that you can get it so cheap! I recommend this game for the fun and the challenges it provides but don't buy it thinking it'll have exceptional graphics.
THE Racing Game!!!
Well, I am a dedicated gamer, especially to racing games and rpg's. I have owned all the Gran Turismo's, and I must say, GT2 is my all-time favorite in the Gran Turismo arena. Of course, the game being made in the late '90s, the graphics cannot hold up to competitors like Need for Speed Underground 2, but the realism of this game is out of control! The amount of cars to choose from is outrageous compared to some of the racing games of the time, like Need For Speed: High Stakes, which came out the same year, but has less than 3% of the choice of fine racing machines to choose from that is offered in GT2. Over 500 cars are available to choose from in GT2, ranging from some of the most exotic cars (i.e.Alfa Romeo, Ashton Martin, Citroen, Lotus, Peugot, Shelby, etc.) to some of the everyday cars, like the Mitsubishi Lancer. The soundtrack on GT2 is hip and totally appropriate, and I personally love it. The game comes with two discs, the simulation mode disc, and the arcade disc. The arcade disc is for those of us who can't wait to race. The simulation mode is deep, and Sony really went out of its way to make sure that you were getting a high quality item when your purchased GT2. An entire reference manual comes with the game, and gives you the low-down on how to optimize your racing skills. Did I mention that this game is compatible with analog control? Thats right, no more having to kill your thumbs trying to turn that corner-you can use the analog control! This feature is one of my favorite, as is the vibration function that lets you feel the road! I don't mean to go on and on, but this game is the one to buy, no matter if your just looking for a quality racing game, or looking to go oldschool from your current PS2, PS3, XBox, or XBox 360 racing games. Oh, did I mention that if your considering buying this game, do it! You won't regret it!
Haven't gotten a chance to play the games yet, I'm waiting on a system. But I will say, the games are in better condition then I expected. A little scratched but nothing too major. Hoping they work, but yeah, I think they will. Pretty good condition for PS1 games.
