Red River (1948) Classic western masterpiece filmed brilliantly by director Howard Hawks. Texas cattle ranchers in need of money after the Civil War conduct the first cattle drive from Texas to Kansas using the Chisholm Trail. Based on a story by writer Borden Chase. Strong performances by actors John Wayne as Thomas Dunson, and Montgomery Cliff as Matt Garth. Film is replete with numerous classic scenes on the trail, photographed in stunning black and white by cinematographer Russell Harlan. Highly entertaining storyline centering around the complex relationship of Dunson and Garth as they bump heads in leading the drive north. Actor Walter Brennan steals the show as Dunson’s sidekick and cook, Nadine Groot. Lessons to be learned about standing up for what is right and moral. This is the Duke at his best! A different role for him. Showing his versatility by going from the young good natured, hard working man to the rough, driven, and cruel older one. I've seen this movie when I was a younger. But still I think its the best movie of John Wayne. Because thee acting in this movie is really great. The close ups are great and action are stupendous. The way John walks hos way through the cattle before he strikes a blow to the face of the other cowboy.
