Cross references
It is difficult for me to correlate the verbal descriptions with the maps. Maybe it's my 83 year old mind. Any way, it is very interesting since I have recently developed an interest in the Civil War. In fact, my wife and I have been taking adult classes about that war.

I bought this to better understand The Personal Memoirs of Ulysses S Grant, a fascinating book, but one TOTALLY without maps of the myriad battles described. It's a beautiful book. It helped somewhat, but the details in US Grant's Memoirs are far too many to be incorporated here. Nevertheless, for someone looking for an overview rather than the miniscule details Grant describes, this will do the trick nicely.

Best civil war reference book I have ever seen.
This is the book that inspired me into not only american history as a youth but also historical miniature painting and wargaming. The maps are beautifuly done and bring the battlefilds to life from an aerial viewpoint, I highly recomend this book.
