    Updating of TURN OF THE SCREW

    The novel THE TURN OF THE SCREW was written, and takes place, in Victorian England. It has been filmed several times. The most well-known screen version is called THE INNOCENTS and stars Debra Kerr as the governess. The novel appears to be about a sexually-repressed governess who is horrified to learn that her preteen charges were previously in the care of an unmarried man and woman who had sex, then killed themselves. The illicit lovers may or may not have molested the children; they may or may not have come back as ghosts; and they may be possessing the children. Or is it all in the governess's mind? The problem, for the modern reader (or viewer of the previous film versions with Victorian settings) is that no one comes out and talks about sex directly. Everything is euphemism and ...
