What is all this scraping, fiddling, and serenading! --I desire I may have no more of it.--And what have you been about, sir?--disturbing some honest family in the same manner, I suppose! Sophia, to-morrow, child, I have determined you shall marry Enoch Issachar; and then--, The Governess is a play written by Richard Brinsley Sheridan, an Irish playwright and politician, in 1806. The play is set in England during the late 18th century and follows the story of Miss Maria Lovemore, a young and beautiful governess who is hired by the wealthy Sir Frederick and Lady Ruby Flint to teach their daughter, Louisa. As Maria begins her duties, she quickly becomes the object of desire for both Sir Frederick and his son, Charles. Maria, however, is in love with Charles's friend, Henry, who is also in love with her. The situation becomes complicated when Lady Ruby discovers her husband's infatuation with Maria and sets out to ruin her reputation. The play explores themes of love, jealousy, and class differences, and features witty dialogue and comedic situations. The characters are well-drawn, with Maria portrayed as a strong and independent woman who refuses to be a victim of circumstance. Overall, The Governess is a classic example of Sheridan's talent for satire and social commentary, and remains a popular work in the canon of English literature.Don Ped.
