On October 3, 1993, Army Rangers and members of the elite Delta Force participated in a covert operation in Mogadishu, Somalia that went horribly wrong. Sent to abduct two lieutenants of a vicious Somali warlord, the soldiers found themselves surrounded by hostile militia. Two Black Hawk helicopters were shot down and many men lost their lives. Mark Bowden of the Philadelphia Inquirer told the story of the battle in his exhaustively researched, critically acclaimed book, BLACK HAWK DOWN, and filmmaker Ridley Scott (GLADIATOR) and screenwriter Ken Nolan have done an amazing job of bringing the dramatic story to the screen. Like Bowden's book, the film does not thoroughly examine the context of the conflict, but gives a detailed and intense blow-by-blow account of the fighting. The outstanding ensemble cast includes Josh Hartnett as a competent but nervous Ranger sergeant leading his first mission, Ewan McGregor as a "desk jockey" who excels when sent into combat, Eric Bana (THE INCREDIBLE HULK) as a cocky and enigmatic Delta, and Ron Eldard as a downed Black Hawk pilot. The violence of the film is brutal and nearly constant. Scott unflinchingly captures the chaos and mayhem of battle with tremendous visual finesse.Read full review
So you are action fan, but you enjoy realistic action and you don't own black hawk down. I've had several copies of black hawk down of dvd, but needed to pickup a bluray version. I'm pretty sure they will remaster it in 4k one day and I'll have to pick that copy up as well. It's by far one of my favorites in my collection, I'm a 3D aficionado, but I enjoy action packed movies as well. This movie and 13 hours are some of the most realistic military action flicks you can buy. You don't need any 3D effect to enjoy a movie of this caliber, a good home surround sound will make it even better. The bullets whizzing by you head and the bangs of rpg's. I need to stop, I'm getting excited again. Long story short, it's a must own. Hope this review helps.

Black Hawk Down starts out with a brief introduction into the U.S. involvement in Somalia, and then takes us on a journey through hell! This movie tells the true story of Task Force Ranger, who were sent to Somalia to put an end to the clan warfare and capture the most powerful warlord in the impoverished African nation. What was supposed to be a routine mission, turned into a fierce 18 hour battle that claimed the lives of 18 American servicemen and resulted in another 73 being wounded. This movie does not "Hollywood" the story at all because it simply did not need to. The story itself was shocking, tragic, and in many senses triumphant. It was an event that very few people in this country knew about at the time. Mark Bowden's book was exceptionally written and the movie follows it extremely well. Be aware...This movie is not for the faint of heart! It depicts the battle in graphic detail and contains scenes of some very gruesome injuries sustained by the men involved. There is one scene where a medic is fighting to save the life of a wounded soldier who has a severed artery in his leg. This is one of the most graphic sequences you will see in a film, so be prepared. Ridley Scott turned in another brilliant job of directing. He successfully puts the audience into the fight and allows us to feel the hopelessness and despair that was felt by these brave men. He tells the story of this battle with exceptional detail and realism. You will be left with a mix of emotions after watching this film, but you will also feel a deep sense of thanks and gratitude for the men and women who are serving our country today. Black Hawk Down is one of the best films in recent years and should not be missed!Read full review
I have watched this movie more than one time, and every time i have concluded that it is a real represantative of realm that surround soldiers on todays battlefields. This is a story about how are they dealing with problems,non-planed situations, andthat everything is actually not about the mission and the politics. It is about looking out of your friend and soldier next to you. The director Ridley Scott (Alien,Gladiator....),took care about detailes that are usually left out from close combat movies,he was not only looking to make great scenes of flashing and shooting,he tryed to tell this story that took place in Mogadishu in Somalia, and it is based on a true event. We see the great moments of hard fight and sacrifice for the men next to you. This is only a small part of many reasons why I bought this movie, and trust me,it is worth seeing, and it"s place should be in your Home Movie Collection.Read full review
I'm not big on spoilers, so I'll be brief about story line(s). This movie is about the incident in Somalia that resulted in a bloody mess. Some may remember the video shown on the NEWS all over the world showing a dead American soldier being dragged through the streets.. this is the event in question. This movie is fairly intense and you will find yourself pulled into the movie quickly. I have always had a deep respect the the men and women that choose to protect our freedom.. this movie is a true to life story that made the respect even deeper. Bottom Line: Not for the young children, but everyone else should find this a truly engaging film well worth the investment of their time and money.
Based on true events. A reality movie unlike anything you have ever seen! You leave the movie feeling like you were there in the thick of the battle with the military men who were sent to Mogadishu. It was difficult to watch, but extremely real. All the horrific events portrayed in the movie really happened, yet Americans were given very little details about the event in the news or media accounts. I recommend this movie to all who are unaware of the events that occurred in Mogadishu, where 2 black hawks were shot down. Remember Somalia? Not many do, but this movie is a historical record of how a group of men suffered and overcame in the worst of circumstances. The movie making part of it will astound you, with the seeming reality of it! Few special effects were employed, yet the entire movie will leave you breathless with the shocking reality of the filmmaking.Read full review
This is one of the few war movies that is not WW2. And it is Fantastic. I really want them to make more modern warfare movies because their is just not enough. WW2 is great but i think it is time to move on. Anyways this movie is action packed and is great. Awesome story which can be very sad, but I found myself cheering for the Army Rangers in this movie. It is really gripping and I just love this movie, and it is even better on Blu-ray. I own this movie on VHS, DVD and now Blu-ray, I love it that much. Great movie and a great change from WW2!
This is a good movie but hard to watch. Clinton really screwed the pooch when it came to giving these soldiers what they needed to complete this mission with minimal casualties. The Generals hands are tied unfortunately when the commander in chief makes the wrong decision. No Gunship support, etc. This movie reminds us that our country is one of few countries willing to battle injustice across the globe. The scene where the 2 snipers agree to secure and protect one of the downed Blackhawks with the pilot still alive against a large group of insurgents is a powerful one.
Engaging and heartfelt. The characters are warm and the energy of the movie is upbeat and truer than many would like to admit about the horror of war.
