Of every movie that has won the coveted Academy Award for Best Picture of the Year, there are only a few of these films that I hold in high esteem. However, the one title of this lot that I consider to be the very best one of them all is 1981's "Chariots Of Fire". While the other 4 nominees were all great productions, this film stands out as a spectacular film achievement. Not only does it rank as my favorite winner for Best Picture; it also ranks as my second favorite movie of all time, right behind the 2 Spielberg-directed motion pictures "Schindler's List" and "Saving Private Ryan". The story centers around the 1924 Olympics in Paris. 2 young men from the United Kingdom are competing for different reasons. Harold Abrahams (played by Ben Cross) is a British man of Jewish ancestry who strives to win. Eric Liddel (played by Ian Charleson) is a Scottish missionary who runs to honor GOD. The overall scope, quality and direction of this film is superb in every way. With a cast of mostly unknowns, the film has such distinguished stars as John Gielgud, Patrick McNee and Lindsay Anderson. Ian Holm was the only cast member to recieve an Oscar nomination (Best Supporting Actor). The film's surprise win as Best Picture caught almost everyone off guard, since it was considered the long-shot. But, it crossed the finish line and rightfully earned its 4 gold medals. It's a classic movie that still holds up perfectly after more than a quarter-century.Read full review
I have always heard about this movie and decided to purchase the VHS version. I liked the scenery of this movie, the time period of the 1920's is fascinating. The length of the movie was perfect and the actors really bring the characters to life. I do wish some of the minoe characters had more development, The movie soundtrack is wonderful and inspiring. With all the bang them and car crash movies of today this cinematic masterpiece passes the test of time.
I have a yearly tradition of watching this every year in December. It's a inspirational true story of a man pursuing his dreams and convictions. He felt Gods presence when he ran and when he lived the life he felt called to do. I watch this to re-ignite my own personal dreams and convictions each year.
It is a wonderful movie depicting how vain life's success really are if they aren't done for the right reasons, to please God.
THis movie demonstrated one man's dedication to God. He kept diligence to never stray from God's plan for him.
I honestly did not LOVE this movie. I think that the best part of the movie was the music. It was just O.K. for me and I do appreciate good movies. I actually was disappointed. I think that it was a little boring. Sorry...
EVERYTHING WAS AS REPRESENTED AND HANDLED VERY SPEEDILY. WELL SATISFIED WITH THIS PURCHASE. JERRY
