Synopsis
Drawing from Charles Darwins secret "transmutation" notebooks and his personal letters, acclaimed science journalist Quammen has sketched a vivid life portrait of the man whose work never ceases to be controversial., A fresh look at Darwin's most radical idea, and the mysteriously slow process by which he revealed it. Evolution, during the early nineteenth century, was an idea in the air. Other thinkers had suggested it, but no one had proposed a cogent explanation for how evolution occurs. Then, in September 1838, a young Englishman named Charles Darwin hit upon the idea that "natural selection" among competing individuals would lead to wondrous adaptations and species diversity. Twenty-one years passed between that epiphany and publication of "On the Origin of Species," The human drama and scientific basis of Darwin's twenty-one-year delay constitute a fascinating, tangled tale that elucidates the character of a cautious naturalist who initiated an intellectual revolution. "The Reluctant Mr. Darwin" is a book for everyone who has ever wondered about who this man was and what he said. Drawing from Darwin's secret "transmutation" notebooks and his personal letters, David Quammen has sketched a vivid life portrait of the man whose work never ceases to be controversial., The story of Charles Darwin and his wondrous, scary idea-the idea of "natural selection" as the main mechanism of evolution-is one of the most exciting in the history of science. Yet twenty-one years passed between Darwin's conception of this idea and his publication of The Origin of Species. In The Reluctant Mr. Darwin, David Quammen draws on Darwin's secret "transmutation" notebooks and private letters to create a meticulous, humane portrait of the man, and a lucid explication of his work, that captures both the personal foibles and the scientific substance. It's an intimate view of a great scientist-taking readers behind the veil of Darwin's greatness and his fame, following him closely through the joys, struggles, and sorrows of his quiet but extraordinarily consequential life. Item was listed as brand new. When the item arrived it was packaged in cellophane shrink wrap; however, it was definitely not in new condition as the covers had scuffs and there was writing on the first page that had been erased. The seller offered a full refund if I returned the book, and even offered free return shipping. I thank him for that. I’m not able to use that option due to a class I need this book for so this transaction gets a neutral rating.

  • Reluctant Mr. Darwin: Reluctant Indeed

I bought the book for a class I was taking called "Darwin and Literature." The book was one of the books that illustrated there was literature Darwin wrote, literature written about him and literature using his techniques on transmutation and natural selection. Usually when books are forced to be read by a class, they tend to lose their insight and value. However, Quammen is an exceptional writer and the reading is easy. I found the book interesting. Even if I never had to take the class, this book is still one to read. If you ever have thought about how did some guy in the Victorian era change the way the world looked at things, this book will let you understand in layman's terms how he did it.
