We have very hard water and a large water softener system but it wasn't enough to rid the odor from bacterial build up in water heater. Our watwater heater is only 6 months old and the anode rod was toast in that amount of time. Removal of old rod was tricky (rerefer to a professional or you tube) but installation only took a couple minutes. 24 hours of use and the water odor was gone. Don't waste your money on cheap rods, definitely get one of thethese. A++
