There are a bunch of ramps and accommodation cutouts machined into the back of the ring. The original one had two small ramps. My chain shifts over very quickly and quietly now. I use it on a Truvativ GXP crank with a 24T small ring, as SRAM recommends. I was thinking about using one of the cheap rings but I'm glad I went with a factory replacement.

Pricey, but exactly the right part for my Giant mt. bike. Be careful, there are other "Truvativ" chainrings with similar tooth numberings, etc., that are $20, but they would not have fit properly. And be certain to get the chainring with the steel peg to prevent the chain from falling to the outside toward the pedal.
