The Baofeng UV-5R is a very popular entry level "Ham" radio. You need a license to transmit legally on this walkie-talkie (now called HT for handheld transmitter). If the cell system is out and the landlines are down, this could be the only communication device that works. Get one for each member of the family.
You don't need a license to listen. I use mine as a scanner.
