James K. McGuire (1868-1923) was skillful regional politician who later in life became a controversial figure on the national scene as well as the protector of Eamon de Valera while the Irish leader was a fugitive from British justice. Although the child of Irish immigrants, McGuire was educated in German-language schools in Syracuse, New York. He was elected to the first of three terms as mayor of Syracuse, when he was twenty-seven., thus earning the nick-name the "Boy Mayor." He helped to establish the city's first art museum, the Everson, invited Andrew Carnegie to build the city library, paved streets for the first time, and pushed to establish thirty-eight public schools. On leaving office, he entered the asphalt business at a time when all the nation's highways were being paved. A powerful public speaker in the cause of Irish nationalism from his teenage years, he championed the cause of Imperial Germany at the beginning of World War I, publishing The King, The Kaiser and Irish Freedom in 1914. Friends in high places protected him from recrimination as the War progressed. When the surviving leader of the 1916 Easter Rising, escaped from British jails in 1919 to come to the United States in a fund-raising tour, McGuire provided refuge and guidance. The exhaustive research of author Joseph E. Fahey, McGuire's grand-nephew, includes unpublished family documents., James K. McGuire: Boy Mayor and Irish Nationalist (Syracuse Univ. Press, 2014) is the story of a self-educated, charismatic leader who overcame personal tragedy in childhood and was elected the youngest mayor of a major city in America at age 26. A reformer with a knack for politics, James McGuire (1868-1923) was elected mayor of Syracuse three times as a Democrat in a Republican bastion. Fahey argues that as a candidate for governor in 1898, McGuire nearly derailed the rise of Theodore Roosevelt and that his ideas and positions informed the candidacy of William Jennings Bryan in his quest for the presidency and the platform of the Democratic Party in those elections. Fahey narrates McGuire's remarkable rise to become a figure in national politics as well as his questionable business dealings along the way., A well written, interesting portrait of a crafty American Irish politician and his people's love for their new home and the land of their heritage., The story of a self-educated, charismatic leader who overcame personal tragedy in childhood and was elected the youngest mayor of a major city in America at age 26.
