The product doesn't work as the battery does not charge and a replacement battery no longer exist...anywhere. The other "battery replacement option" to use aaa batteries was missing a connection so it too does not work. In other words....I was sold a unit that looks good, has all the manuals, but it does not function as no batteries and parts are available....anywhere. I am going to try to figure out how to repair the aaa battery pack to see if it works....but right now, the unit is worthless.

I bought the Magellan Explorist 500 off of ebay refurbished and have been very pleased with it. The benefits I see are good detail on the color screen, great click stick, ease of use, manages both geocaches and tracks quite well, good map screen customization options, easy pc connectivity and the SD card expandability. The downfalls I see are that the backlight cannot be turned off, only down, it takes a special battery as opposed to AA or AAAs and the file structure for switching between the SD Card and internal memory takes a little getting used to. Overall I have been very pleased with the unit and think the positives greatly outweigh the negatives. Battery life is good, logging in at about 12-14 hours depending on how much button clicking you are doing. I'm using a Kingston 1 Gig SD Card in my unit and it is working great. It will hold more waypoints or maps then you would probably ever need on there. The 32 Megs of internal memory alone will hold a good number of way points. Overall I would say this is a great unit. Easy to use, lots of funtionality and can be found at bargain prices.Read full review
This is our fourth Magellan, the second of the explorist series. We find them very easy to use, and their ability to pickup Satellites in all types of conditions, and under heavy cover is very impressive. I have yet to loose tracking with one, even when it's in a pack and in harsh conditions. This is the number one reason I have continued to purchase these units. I have been with many other people in the outdoors when they could not continually keep satellite reception and would loose tracking. We purchased Mapsend Topo 3D and installed it on all of the receivers. With the unlimitied memory and PC interface, you can transfer info from one unit to another through the computer. We use our GPS units all of the time. The negatives are: the rechargable battery packs are worthless when in the back country, unless you can find a tree with an outlet for your charger. We purchased the battery adapter, but the AAA batteries don't last as long as they say they will. So far 4-6 hours, even with the light off. Take lots of extra batteries...Read full review
The eXplorist 500 is an excellent little handheld GPS. The color screen is easy to see, the rechargable battery and SD card compatablity is enough to choose this unit over others. It wans't until I purchased (separately) the MapSend streets and roads detail maps DVD ROM that this thing really came alive! The detail map has all of the streets and roads including obscure little dirt roads we use for snowmobiling. I intend to purchase the topographic software as well. The only reason I rated this good instead of excellent is due to the additonal $149.99 software required to make it usable especially in the car. NOTE: I purchased my DVDROM brand new from an ebay retailer for about $100. Highly recommended! Another note I'd like to mention is in regard to the less expensive eX[plorist 500LE model. The LE (limited edition) does NOT include the rechargable battery and all reviews I've read say it eats regular batteries much faster than the Lithium Ion battery pack runs down. The redular model will more make up for the minor price difference in batteries alone.Read full review
I really was worried at first about if I would like this product vs. the Garmin E-Trex CX and Hcx. But my worries were put to rest when I received mine and my friends received their Garmins. First of all the File structure setup is wonderful. You can change map reagions with easy by pulling differrent files from your sd Card. This right here makes the product worth while. If you are a geocacher like me, this is particually useful when loading different caches as it will only allow 200 at a time. The only 2 issues I have with this device is the internal battery. If you can, get the newer version of the Explorist 500 as it takes basic batteries. I have been caught a couple times with a dead battery and no way to charge it. Also it takes a little time to load when starting up. Usualy about 3 or 4 minutes. I don't know what an average time is for a GPS startup is but it was a little inconvenient. Despte the couple of issues I have with my Explorist I would not have bought anything different other than a higher Explorist model. While my friends are dealing with limitations with their Cx and HCx, I am far better off.Read full review
This item is good for travel, it is very small with a good screen. It uses regular AAA batteries or a proprietary rechargeable (AAA last 6-8 hrs, the rechargeable 17 hrs, they don't tell you that). With that said the battery life is OK. If you use this GPS for camping (finding your way to a paper map point, or to find your way back home) it is very good. I would purchase the rechargeable battery and keep a set of AAA on hand, in case of emergency. As for using it as a street mapping GPS, it is no good without the mapsend software (which is very expensive). You can expand the memory of the device through SD cards, which will allow you to save map data (from the expensive CD). You also need software to transfer the CD map data to the device and a cable. CONCLUSION: As a camping GPS it is fine. It is small, light, with a good gps receiver, you can use inexpensive AAA bats or a rechargeable bat, and the device is not very expensive less than $200.00 (on ebay). BUT IT IS NOT GOOD FOR CAR USE, NO STREET LEVEL GUIDANCE!.Read full review
I like this GPS because it is light and compact, has good color graphics, good battery life with a lithium rechargeable battery, and a large selection of legacy mapping software that can be loaded for various uses including land (street and topo)and water. What I dislike is that Magellan no longer supports this type of GPS as it was too flexible for their revised marketing model that locks an individual piece of mapping software for a limited area to a single GPS. The newest software for this unit is now several years old and getting older however it is still very useful. I also bought this GPS as I had another eXplorist 500 and a Meridian that used the same software and/or accessories.
One of the more economic GPSs on the market. Accurate to within about 20 feet. Saved me a couple of times on a Mule Deer hunt in the mtns, where every pine tree and mtn look the same. Cool thing is is that you can recharge the cadmium battery, but also carry some AAAs in your pocket if you zap the battery too soon. The only complaint that I have, is that the batteries do not last but about 1.5 hrs of runtime! If you leave it on...you'd better have some backups. Definitely a good GPS for the money. I have yet to use it for fishing. I'm interested to see if the 20 ft. accuracy will get me close enough to my sunken trees?
This unit was used very little, in very good condition. It was a little unclear what was included, especially on the Magellan web site. It is a discontinued model, but I was warned that it is more reliable than Magellan's new Triton series. This one included the Li-Ion battery, which is not standard. I needed to order the AC Charger for it, though. It also came with MapSend Topo 3D, which is again discontinued. There seens to be some discrepancies as to whether MapSend DirectROute works with this model or not (for turn-by-turn street navigation. I bought this model for hiking and geocaching, and it works well.
