The Devil's Playground (2003, DVD)
Who wants to party like the Amish? In 2002, Sundance was set a-buzz by a documentary about Amish kids who, when they turn 16 years old, get to participate in a ritual called "Rumspringa." Basically, Amish kids get taste the world of the "English" (or what you and I would call normal life) in order to make an informed decision on whether or not they are going to join the Amish church. Of course, if you take some seriously repressed kids and let them loose to taste the sins of the world - you’re going to get some making up for lost time. And if you have a camera around, you get to see things like teen girls in white bonnets and plain, homemade dresses (looking straight out of Little House on the Prairie) chugging beers and chain smoking cigarettes, boys pulling bong hits and dealing crank, ... Sounds great, huh? Too bad it isn't. Because once you get past the shock of seeing Amish kids do stuff like that, there's no where else to go. Or, I should say, there's no where else the filmmakers go. What we get is an exploration of two main characters. The first is an eighteen year old meth addict/dealer that wants to kick his habit and get back into the church. That premise is promising, but like all stupid 18-year-olds, he simply talks about it like it will happen one day as opposed to actually trying it. It isn't until he rats out some other drug dealers to stay out of jail that he is forced back into his parent’s house and the Amish lifestyle. Here, the kid does well - he gets off drugs, finds an Amish girl to fall in love with, and generally finds happiness. Of course, they break up, he finds drugs again, and then sets out to find his ex - who's moved away. The other character is a twenty-three year old ex Amish girl that now lives in a trailer park, shunned by her family. It seems that when she went through "Rumspringa," she fell in love with another Amish guy and they both joined the church, ready to get married. Then she realized that an Amish life is one where the woman is treated as nothing more than a baby making machine and she left. And while she doesn't regret doing it, the fact that her family turned their back on her has made her very depressed. The problem with this documentary is that the subject matter is fascinating, but the execution is boring and trite. There is so much about that community that we, the general public, don't know or understand that taking the opportunity really explain the myths and sterotypes associated with the Amish would have been the smart way to go. Unfortunately, in the 77 minute runtime, we have a meth addict rambling minute after minute. The film ultimately becomes an opportunity wasted. The DVD is pretty sparse, giving us only director commentary and three deleted scenes. I do recommend this as a rental, but try not to set the bar too high with your expectations.

The Devil's Playground
This movie shows how young teenage boys in an all-boy environment respond and react to their surroundings. The way they interact with one another is displayed so realistically here. The film also shows the difference between reality and fantasy in the minds of the adults who are suppose to be leaders for the boys. The situations are very realistic, and the coming of age attitudes are unique and treated with respect. A great picture of how Catholic seminaries used to exist when pubescent adolescents were allowed to live in a communal environment; to live out their vocations as they saw them in their own eyes.This movie shows how young teenage boys in an all-boy environment respond and react to their surroundings.
