About this product

Product Information

Based on Nathanael West's satirical novel, John Schlesinger's THE DAY OF THE LOCUST is an absorbing look at the desperate characters who populate the Hollywood film industry. Idealistic young set designer Tod Hackett (William Atherton) travels to 1930s-era Hollywood to find fame and fortune but encounters a dismal world of broken people, shattered dreams, and phoney healers pandering to the lost. He soon falls in love with aspiring actress Faye Greener (Karen Black), a cruel, manipulative woman who lives with her drunken father (Burgess Meredith, in an Oscar-nominated performance) and loves the strange man-child Homer Simpson (Donald Sutherland). Their passions collide at a disastrous Hollywood premiere that remains one of the most horrifying and tragic climaxes in film history.

Could have been packaged with more care. Only half of the box had puff pillows, the rest was empty air space. Received package with several broken trays & head unit. Rather disappointed in what I received. Most likely shipping damaged.

movie really captures the spirit of hollywood in the late '30s and early '40s. in the spirit of "what price hollywood" it was a movie about movies. it took almost 35 years before the tale could be told. the tale wasn't pretty or inspirational. it was dirty, seamy, and downright unpleasant. it tells how stars were made, how movies were made and all the clawing people who wanted to be in them. outside of the protagonist no one was particularly likeable. homer simpson was pitiable, adore was sick, and the karen black character was despicable. the acting, the costumes, the locations, and the movie sets were of high quality production values. the historical context was accurate. aimee semple mcpherson added a nice flavor to the context of the times. if you are into movies about this time period ...

  • Classic book, classic movie!

Nobody could love Nathanael West's book "Day of the Locust" more than, maybe even as much as, I do. I am transfixed by it. Naturally, I was excited when this movie came out and hoped it could do justice to the book, if not come close to capturing the "feel" of the book, the power it held for me. It did, it does. So much so I was amazed. I will forever love Karen Black. Donald Sutherland was perfect as Homer. I can't imagine that Nathanael West (a screenwriter as well as novelist) would've given this movie five stars, a thumb's up, a standing ovation.
