How to Make Mexican Spiced Mocha Popsicles

Mexican hot chocolate will always have a special place in my heart. My mom used to make us a cup every once in a while when we were kids. When I think about those days I always remember tasting the hint of sugar, vanilla, and cinnamon mixed with a toasted chocolate flavor! It was such a treat.

That memory is actually what made me start adding cinnamon to my coffee from time to time. I add ½ teaspoon of cinnamon together with 4 tablespoons of ground coffee and place it to brew. The house smells fantastic every time I make coffee this way, but the best part is the spicy twisted flavor of the freshly brewed coffee, it takes me back to my childhood home in Mexico.

I created this version of non-dairy Mexican spiced mocha popsicles to keep indulging my craving for spicy flavors during the hot days of summer. The popsicles turned out delicious and flavorful, but they are actually spicy!

If you would like to create a milder version just add half the amount of spices listed below in the ingredients list.

How to Make Mexican Spiced (Non-Dairy) Mocha Popsicles

INGREDIENTS:

  • 4 tablespoons of ground coffee

  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon

  • 1/8 teaspoon of chili powder

  • 1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper

  • 1 piece of Mexican chocolate bar, something like Chocolate Ibarra or Chocolate Abuelita is a great option

  • 1 cup of almond milk

Step 1

Stir together the ground coffee, cinnamon, chili powder and cayenne pepper, place into the brew basket.

Step 2

Set the carafe in place to brew. I used my Ninja Coffee Bar Coffee Maker with Thermal Carafe for this recipe. I made about 3 cups of coffee.

Step 3

While the coffee is brewing, mix almond milk and a piece of Mexican chocolate bar to make the hot chocolate. You can add as much chocolate as you want for a more intense and sweet flavor.

Step 4

When the brew is complete, mix the coffee with the hot chocolate and place the mix into the popsicle molds.

Step 5

Allow pops to freeze fully overnight, or about 8 hours.
