Linen! The most breathable fabric on earth! Except for fishnet! And maybe cheescloth! Why am I using so many exclamation points?! I don't know! Growing up I think I had one linen shirt, which I never wore because I wasn't used to it, (having never been worn or washed, it seemed scratchy), because linen had the reputation for wrinkling and I was too lazy to iron, and because the label said Dry Clean Only and I wasn't about to start down that road. Gradually, though, I came to appreciate linen's remarkable properties - its being (usually) twice as cool as cotton while paradoxically being twice as strong, its tendency to get softer with age, the fact that it can usually be machine washed if you're careful to line dry. Today, living in the desert, linen is an indispensable part of my wardrobe.
