The Thunderbird, sometimes called the T-bird, was the first personal luxury car introduced to the market featuring convenient amenities and great performance. Ford introduced it in 1954 for the 1955 model year as a competitor for the Chevy Corvette, which was new at the time. The Ford Thunderbird had a two seat coupe or convertible layout just like the Corvette and an eight cylinder engine with optional automatic transmission. From 1958 to 1971, Ford also offered a four door model. An optional sunroof was added with the 1960 Thunderbird, and a vinyl roof was optional after 1961. Starting in 1989, a six cylinder engine was introduced for better fuel efficiency. The Ford redesigned the Thunderbird in 2002 to add some of the retro style that makes vintage models so appealing. Resembling a European roadster, the Thunderbird features round headlights, a sleek silhouette, and a prominent grille.
