About Stanley Cup

As an international symbol of excellence in the hockey world, the Stanley Cup actually happens to be older than the NHL itself. First known as the Dominion Hockey Challenge Cup, this famous silver trophy was first awarded to the Montreal Hockey Club in 1893. Unlike the current Stanley Cup, also distinguished by hockey historians as the Presentation Cup, it is cast completely from English Sterling Silver, commissioned by Lord Stanley of Preston, the Governor General of Canada in the late 19th century who became mesmerized by the sport. Reportedly, the original Stanley Cup hasn’t seen the inside of a stadium since 1969, housed for eternal display in the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto, but every year the Cup continues to accrue engravings of the prevailing squad. Though the Stanley Cup is unique in that there is truly only one active trophy that transfers hands as champions change, fans as loyal as Lord Stanley himself can purchase a trophy of their own in the form of a mini Stanley Cup on eBay. Though you may never have your name immortalized on the actual Cup alongside legends like Wayne Gretzky and Bobby Orr, having your own replica at home is the mark of a true hockey fanatic.
