About Peplum

In Ancient Greece, women wore a flowing garment called a peplos, doubled over and cinched at the waist to look like a long shirt worn over a skirt. Modern fashion created the peplum style as a nod to these ancient Greek robes. Top brands like Forever 21 and Charlotte Russe develop their own unique take on the fashion with a variety of lovely peplum skirts, shirts, and dresses. In a peplum shirt, the style usually takes the form of a sleeveless or short-sleeved top, with a seam either at the waist or a few inches above the waist. Just below this line, the shirt flares outward, sometimes subtly and sometimes dramatically. The shirt may be long enough to reach the hips or so short that it exposes the midriff. A peplum dress has a similar style and shape, except that it includes an attached sheath skirt portion below the flared part of the shirt. Look for the style on eBay, where reliable sellers offer new or lightly used clothing. Peplum dresses, shirts, and jackets tend to flatter the female figure, highlighting the waistline and accentuating the hips for that coveted hourglass shape.
