About Munson - Sports Mem, Cards & Fan Shop

Known as the "heart and soul" of the New York Yankees in the 70s, Thurman Munson left behind a legacy that the team and fans can look back on and remember with pride. Born in Akron, Ohio, this all-star player was the first team captain named by the team (since Lou Gherig) and hit .302 during his first year with the Yankees, earning Munson the title of Rookie of the Year. Munson's crown in his career, however, was leading the beloved Yankees to two consecutive World Series titles and the title of Most Valuable Player for 1976. For collectors, a vintage Thurman Munson autograph on a photo or card is a rare find, even on eBay. Unfortunately, his brilliant 10-year career was tragically cut short on August 2, 1979, when the plane he was landing crashed. Fans, teammates, and the entire franchise mourned the loss of this baseball legend. Still, his legacy lives on and his star shines forever brightly in the hearts and minds of his fans.
