The Mazda 929 is a car of many different names. In Japan, it was originally called the Mazda Luce, but in export markets like the United States, the company dubbed the vehicle the Mazda RX-4; however, the second generation vehicles carry the Mazda 929 name. In 1977, Mazda redesigned the sedan and renamed it the Luce Legato in Japan, but the export versions are called the 929L. Mazda continued to rename each remodel in Japan but kept the 929 moniker abroad. Therefore, names such as Cosmo and Sentia refer to versions of the 929. Mazda produced the car for 20 years, so there is a lot of variation between different generations, but all models are full-sized sedans built on the company's LA or H platforms. The cars tend to be fairly efficient compared to other vehicles of the same age and class, offering better fuel economy than similar cars. Because the model had a long production run, enjoyed strong sales, and holds up well over time, there are plenty of used 929s available.
