Back when it all began for the Gibson Guitar Corporation in 1922, the Gibson L-5 was its first guitar. Another first regarding the L-5 was that it was the first guitar to feature F-holes. Since that time, there have been a number of improvements made to the L-5 guitar, including making it into an electric guitar in 1951. Things to look for on an L-5 guitar, which is now more of a jazz-style instrument, include a solid spruce top matched with solid maple sides and back and a five-piece maple neck with an ebony fretboard. The guitar features gold hardware, Tune-o-matic bridge tailpiece, a pair of 1957 classic humbucking pickups, and two finishes: natural and vintage sunburst. Additionally, there are many custom shop versions of the L-5 guitar available, so the finishes vary as well. With such a long lineage, there are also a number of parts and accessories available to keep your guitar in tip-top shape, such as a Gibson L-5 pickguard. Some older Gibson L-5 guitars are some of the most valuable guitars around, many of which are part of the large inventory of Gibson guitars available on eBay.
