Machines are fine for professional body builders who live at the gym, but they are not an efficient way for ordinary people to work out in their limited free time. Using free weights, you need all your muscles to keep the weights stabilized, allowing you to use more muscle groups at the same time. By adding additional free weights plates to the set over the course of a few weeks, rather than simply pushing a button on a machine, you can visualize your progress. For versatility, look for a set with a range of different free weight plates. Among the vast inventory on eBay, you could find a starter set that includes two handles, two 5-pound plates, and four 2.5-pound plates. Of course, keep safety in mind and remember that it is easy to injure yourself with free weights if you drop them or lift them incorrectly. Exercise with the right form, though, and you can look like a bodybuilder without actually going to the trouble of moving into the gym.
