About Ducati 996

During the height of World War II, the Ducati family continued to work in its Italian factory making radio parts despite frequent Allied bombings of the city. Eventually, the family business would change from making radios to engineering world-class motorcycles, but that dedication to hard work and perseverance remains with the company today, as seen in the exquisite Ducati 996 racing bike. Ducati decided to up the ante from its previous 916 racing bike, and started with the Ducati 996 engine. This 996cc motor produces 122 horsepower at 8,500 rpm for a top speed of 161 mph, and in order to handle all of that power, engineers reinforced the bike's chassis and gave it two fuel injectors per cylinder. However, still not completely satisfied, continual tweaking of the engine led to the development of the Ducati 996 SPS, which at the time of its introduction, featured the strongest motor ever made by Ducati for racing and carried heavy duty Ohlins suspension and front forks to handle the extra power. Production of the Ducati 996 ceased in 2002, but it is still possible to find this exceptionally engineered racing bike on eBay for those who want to take the ride of a lifetime.
