About Charley Harper
The history of American art is proud and varied with a wide variety of genres involving nature humor, and narrative. Charley Harper was one of the successful artists embracing these elements. Not only was he a renown conservationist, he was first and foremost known for his work in American Modernism. He screen-printed a large number of subjects, his most popular being his wildlife serigraphs. In these prints, he interpreted the animal kingdom with a stylized approach using hard lines and geometric shapes while embracing the flatness of the paper surface. They often tell a story or depict the animal and its behavior in a humorous way. Instead of focusing on replicating a realistic version of his subjects, Harper tried to capture them using the fewest number of visual elements. He called this style 'minimal realism.' These prints are often made into posters, while others grace the pages of books as well. You can find plenty of his wildlife prints and a diverse array of his early work on eBay in the form of originals or copies.
