About Ceylon Coins
What is now Sri Lanka used to be the island nation of Ceylon, located about 18 miles southeast of India. Ceylon coins have a long history going back to the fifth century B.C.E. when Vijaya, the founding father of the Sinhalese people, arrived. It is possible to find coins going back as far as 2,200 years minted by this country. You can get coins from Ceylon in a variety of conditions through the large inventory on eBay. Perhaps the easiest coins to find are from recent history, going back 100 to 200 years. This would have been during British rule from 1815 to Sri Lankan independence in 1948, and its independence afterwards. You can also find some pre-modern coins that are punch-marked in a circle or square shape, and long narrow Chera goddess coins. Some of the images seen on these earliest coins are a tree and swastika, an elephant and a swastika, bull and two reverse fish, and Raja Raja the Great Emperor.
