About Buffalo Coins
As a coin collector lays out his wares on the table, one coin stands out from the gold and silver. The Buffalo coin, made from copper and nickel, has no precious metal to its name, but it does include the exquisite design of an Indian head on one side and the American buffalo on the other. Minted from 1913 to 1938, this classic American coin is worth thousands of dollars for a very rare version. eBay lists both the classic Buffalo nickel as well as the modern Buffalo coin that comes in either silver or gold bullion. Bullion coins are pieces made from precious metal not designed for circulation. The commemorative 1-ounce silver Buffalo coin uses 0.99 percent of fine silver and displays the same James Fraser design found on the original Buffalo nickel. The 1-ounce gold Buffalo coin is the same as the silver version except it contains 0.99 percent pure gold. While the bullion coins are valuable, the original Buffalo nickel is the prize of any coin collection.
