Part of the third generation of Chevrolet Corvettes, the 1978 Corvette is noteworthy for being the silver anniversary of the model, which debuted in 1953. As a result, many different models of the Corvette were available that year, and a number of different celebrations occurred, including having the car serve as the pace car at that year's Indianapolis 500. As far as accoutrements go, the Corvette resembled other third-generation, or C3 Corvettes, having eliminated the steel bumpers on the front and back several years earlier. A special nose appears on all 1978 Vettes, as do fuel door emblems. Engine choices included 350 cubic inch, 5.7-liter small block V8 engines mated to either a four-speed manual transmission or Turbo-Hydramatic three-speed automatic transmission. The base L48 engine achieved 185 horsepower while the upgraded L-82 engine hit 220 horsepower. Two special editions, namely the 1978 Corvette Silver Anniversary edition and the 1978 Corvette Pace Car edition, were available to the public to celebrate the Corvette's birthday. The Silver Anniversary Edition came in two-tone silver and gray while the Pace Car featured black and silver two-tone paint. The standard Vettes came in the line's usual colors, such as red, black, white, and blue. Many options are available for buyers looking to purchase the anniversary Vette, several of which are part of the large inventory on eBay. If you want to turn heads, when driving down the road or just sitting in your driveway, own your very own 1978 Corvette.
