About 1 oz Gold Krugerrand Coins
In an effort to increase the demand for South African gold, the country took the unusual step of releasing its 1 oz. gold Krugerrand coins as legal tender in 1967. Many of the large golden coins minted by governments all around the world only exist as bullion coins, which means they get their value from the precious metal used in the coin itself and never see circulation. The Krugerrands, however, often see high circulation numbers due to their legal tender status. South Africa produced 6 million coins alone in 1978. On one side, the Krugerrand features the image of Paul Kruger, former President of the South African Republic and hero of the Second Boer War, and a Springbok antelope prancing on the other. The 1 oz. gold Krugerrand coins are the largest made in South Africa, but the country also produces smaller 1/4 oz. gold coins and 1/10 oz. gold coins. There are also proof editions swirling around the market for collectors who value the coin for more than just the gold content.
