Other American Girl Dolls

Since 1986, the American Girls line has released dolls featuring little girls and stories based on different walks of life. These lives and stories were originally based on historical events but now include current times and events. They can be dressed up with special outfits and other accessories, and they have become a collectible item for children across the world.

Which company creates American Girl dolls?

The line was created and released by Pleasant Company, which was created by the founder Pleasant Rowland. They have been a subsidiary of Mattel since 1998.

Which notable American Girl Dolls have been retired?

Some of the dolls from the original line that have been discontinued include Molly McIntire, Samantha Parkington, Felicity Merriman, and Kirsten Larson. Along with the American Girl dolls, their dress styles and outfits were retired as well. Other retirements from American Girl include:

  • American Girl Minis: Five dolls were initially released for the line as accessories for the original dolls in the line. In 2000, the Minis started selling dolls as a unique product.
  • Bitty Baby: These dolls were approximately 3 inches smaller than the original American Girl dolls. Designed for girls ages 3 and up, the dolls were designed to introduce to toddlers the concept of a younger brother or sister.
  • Bitty Twins: These twin dolls were designed to be a special part of the Bitty Baby line but eventually became their own line. They were initially made as toddlers but "grew up" around 2006 to become preschoolers.
  • Hopscotch Hill School: With a lifespan of 3 years, the Hopscotch Hill dolls were designed for the early elementary age group. There were four dolls released, and the accompanying books showed parents methods for increasing their child's self-esteem.
Were any boy dolls released for American Girl?

While the Bitty Twins line initially sold boys as part of the twin doll set, they had yet to release a boy in the standard American Girl age. After many requests, American Girl released Logan Everett. He was designed to be a drummer for his friend Tenney Grant, who is an upcoming country singer and was then was released as a regular character.

Who were the first American Girls?

The first release featured three young ladies from the historical period. They included:

  • Molly McIntire: Molly was created to represent a young girl growing up from 1934 to 1944 in America. She was the only doll to wear glasses until the contemporary line began. Her outfits reflect the financial difficulties her family faced.
  • Kirsten Larson: A new arrival to Minnesota, the American Girl doll from Sweden represents pioneer life in 1845. Her book reflects the adjustments she made during the transition.
  • Samantha Parkington: Sam is shown as a defiant, stubborn girl who struggles to be a proper young lady. She was raised by her grandmother after being orphaned in 1900.
