The Details Behind Type A Female to Female USB Cables

USB or Universal Serial Bus is the name given to a type of connector that was designed to standardize the connections between personal computers, keyboards, mouses, printers, and other peripherals. Since its release in 1996, USB has become an industry standard and is used almost universally for peripheral connections as well as being adopted by smartphones to establish battery charging connections. With the advancement and development of emerging technologies comes the demand for more sophisticated cables and a further simplification of the interactions between computers and peripheral devices.

What types of USB cables are there?

Since the creation of USB connectors in the mid-90s, three types of USB connector have emerged. Each type of connector has to do with the physical build of the plugs and ports. There are standard, micro, and mini sizes for the first two types of USB connector.

  • USB A - A USB A is a rectangle-shaped connector that is the most common type of USB port found on host devices such as computers, video game systems, and media players.
  • USB B - This connector type consists of a square-shaped piece that connects to most peripheral devices, such as printers, smartphones, and external hard drives.
  • USB C - This looks very similar to the USB B mini but offers much higher transfer and power output than the other variants. The C-type also has reverse plug orientation so you can plug it in upside down as well as right side up. It also has bi-directional power flow that lets you charge devices in either direction.
What versions of USB cables are there?

There have been five versions of USB that have come out. The different versions of the connector represent changes in speed and functionality.

  • Version 1.0 - Release date 1996. Transfer speeds up to 1.5 MB/s. Available on standard USB A and B types.
  • Version 1.1 - Release date 1998. Transfer speeds up to 12 MB/s. Available on standard A and B types.
  • Version 2.0 - Release date 2001. Transfer speeds up to 60 MB/s. Available on standard, mini, and micro A and B types.
  • Version 3.0 - Release date 2011. Transfer speeds up to 625 MB/s. Available on standard, mini. and micro A and B types.
  • Version 3.1 - Release date 2014. Transfer speeds up to 2.5 GB/s. Available on USB C only.
What is the difference between a male and female adapter?

Female adapters are the standard hosts found on computers, network hubs, and any other device into which a peripheral is plugged. The male adapter, by contrast, is the peripheral cable coming off smartphones, external hard drives, and other devices of that nature. Sometimes there will be a need to connect two male cords together which can be done with a female adapter to female coupler or cable. This is a cable with two female adapter ends instead of the normal one male and one female end. Male to male, male to female, and female to female couplers and cables exist in standard, micro, and mini sizes, and there are variants between every size for maximum flexibility between connected devices.
