Programming a garage door opener is simple, and you likely won't even have to do it most of the time. The garage door opener remote that comes with your garage door will already be programmed to open that door, but if that remote is lost or broken, you can easily program a replacement. Just press the button marked LEARN on your opener unit and a light should flash for about 30 seconds. During that time, all you have to do is press a button on your remote control. Four major garage door system brands are created and owned by a single company: the Chamberlain Group. It is the parent company of these four different door opener brands, and they are the following:
- Chamberlain: Taking its name from its parent, Chamberlain focuses on do-it-yourself garage door systems you install by yourself.
- Craftsman: Craftsman products are the same as the original Chamberlain products but rebranded to be sold at Sears stores.
- LiftMaster: LiftMaster is the brand of door openers meant for professionals to be installed by professionals.
- Clicker: The company also owns the Clicker brand, which are a type of universal garage door remotes.
The garage door system is powered by an internal battery that takes its charge from your home's electric system. As a strategy of running smaller and more efficient motors, the power source inside a door opener's operator unit converts the AC current from your home into a DC current to power the garage doors.
The garage door remote, on the other hand, uses a simpler replaceable battery. The size of the power source usually depends on where the remote is stored. For example, those that attach to a key ring are typically powered by small button batteries while those that are attached to a sun visor can afford to be larger, consequently using AAA or AA batteries.
