DJ Turntables

If you are interested in becoming a DJ, it is necessary for you to take note of musical trends. Regardless of what type of music you plan to play, it is important to know how a turntable works. There are many different brands of DJ turntables to choose from, so anyone can find one that suits their needs.

What is a turntable?

A turntable is a piece of audio equipment that is capable of recording and producing sounds. These devices have developed from the phonograph and gramophone into what we know as a record player. Turntables use a spinning disk and a stylus to produce sound. A motor spins the platter of a turntable at a consistent speed. You place a vinyl record on top of the spinning plate and as the stylus pin rides the grooves of the record, it converts the vibrations into sounds. This conversion is created by either a belt or direct drive style of turntable.

What is the difference between belt and direct tables?

A belt style table spins the platter using an elastic belt that is attached to the table's motor. The plate sits on a bearing, which allows it to rotate or move, and is separated from the motor. Some benefits of the belt style are the belt absorbs shock and prevents the motor's vibrations from reaching the platter. Keeping the motor separated from the plate creates less noise transmission from the tone arm and produces a better sound quality.

In a direct drive, the platter is directly attached to the motor, causing it to spin. The direct drive style creates a consistent speed and a fast startup time. Direct styles have a higher torque, causing the plate to be less affected from outside sources like your hand and causing less sound distortion. Sound quality can be improved by placing shock absorbers between the motor and plate.
