The anime fandom is a phenomenon that has increased in popularity internationally towards the end of the 20th century. Otakus worldwide collect anime figures, dolls, and toys to express their personal connection to the Japanese art form. These collectible items are modeled after many of the anime characters that have originated in Japan.

What is anime?

Anime is a catchall term for Japanese animated media. It comes from a truncated version of “animeshon,” the Japanese word for animation. Anime is unique from other forms of animation because of its storytelling techniques and signature style of animation. Due to the very nature of anime's widespread influence, there is a wide variety of collectible goods available for those living both in Japan and around the world.

How did anime become known worldwide?

The international anime boom was preceded by the Western fascination with manga, Japanese comic books, in the 1970s. Later in the decade, countless mangas were adapted into feature-length anime movies. When the 80s came along, the "giant robot" genre gained a lot of attention. The phenomenon is possibly due to its spiritual similarity to big-budget action blockbusters that were heavily promoted at the time. In the 21st century, Hayao Miyazaki with Studio Ghibli revolutionized Japanese anime into being a legitimate art to be Seen by the world's eyes. Today, collecting anime figures such as Nendoroid, Kotobukiya, and other toys is a popular hobby among anime fans worldwide.

What is the Totoro Plush?

Totoro is the titular character from the Studio Ghibli cult classic, My Neighbor Totoro. He is the fat cat forest spirit of the grandest tree in the village. These plush figures are typically a few inches tall, and many are available with smiling faces, as well as small props such as umbrellas and leaves. They are ideal for a Ghibli fan who enjoys having a stuffed animal to snuggle with.

How do you maintain or clean figures and toys?

Whether you're cleaning a Kotobukiya PVC figure or one of the many Nendoroid toys, cleaning and maintenance is relatively similar. If you want to keep your collectible figures in mint condition, consider keeping it in its original packaging, or purchase a case in which you can store them. To clean your figures, dolls, and other toys, wipe them clean with a towel and a mild detergent if needed.
